Practice Description:
I help people empower themselves. We tap into their inner strengths which are often unrealized or eclipsed by the problems. I challenge my clients to be open to the possibility that what they see as insurmountable obstacles are really opportunities for change and growth. This occurs in a supportive and nurturing environment. I encourage clients to identify their ultimate goals as we embark on the journey of developing their "truest, best selves." Usually, the desire to confront issues by seeking counseling means that change is imminent, and one is "ripe" with the courage to move on in this process.
Ultimately, this perspective and balance translates into improved self-concept and empowerment. Clients are less blocked from pursuing their goals and dreams and have a stronger sense of self.
One of my specialties is working with addictions. I have worked for over twenty years both in in-patient treatment facilities and in outpatient private practice with the chemically dependent population and their families. Other specialties include grief and loss, family counseling, couple's counseling, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), adjustment disorders, and spirituality.
I often work with the families of clients as every person in a family is affected if one member is having problems. Thus, we identify the dysfunction and change patterns of interaction or "boundaries" within the family in order to achieve therapeutic and long-term change. This involves seeing the whole family as the "client" and not just the individual seeking help. The whole "family system" is often contributing to the problem.
